The appearance of cannabis seeds is a subject that raises several questions amongst growers. We often get asked about how cannabis seeds should seem, with regards to their dimensions, shape and colour, as these parameters are believed to be closely related to seed grade. In this post we take a comprehensive look at the key physical characteristics of cannabis seeds in order to clarify any questions that you may have.

The size of cannabis seeds

As most of the cannabis strains that are presently on the market are polyhybrids, the size of the seeds can vary depending on their hereditary line.

It is hence incorrect to believe that this is a marker of poor quality.

If, on the other hand, the seeds appear too big, this may be triggered by a lack of macronutrients during the plant's growth cycle. As any grower with some experience will realize, calcium deficiencies are addressed by adding calcium and mg, a combination that assists in reestablishing the optimal nutritional balance of plants.

So in this situation, an increase in size could be a clear indicator of this addition of calcium and magnesium, which is carried out in order to alleviate that macronutrient shortage during growth. Critical + is a clear example that colour, opposite to what many cultivators believe, is not always a direct quality indicator: these unquestionably high-quality seeds display a distinctly light grey, almost whitish grey, to a mid-tone grey colour.

However, a greenish colour is a clear sign of underdevelopment, which means that the seed hasn't developed fully or it hasn't received all the necessary resources to achieve full maturity. In this specific case, if you buy seeds with this color you need to reach out to your supplier right away and try to have them substituted.

Another factor that can be confusing is the fact that a ripe, freshly-harvested cannabis seed has a brighter and darker color than after it's been packaged for 1 to 2 months.
